Women form half the population of Malaysia. Women contribute greatly to the country. But do women's voices get heard?

The Women's Candidacy Initiative seeks to advance the status of women by encouraging the participation of women in politics.

There are still many laws and policies that discriminate against women - for example, the Guardianship Act, the Immigration Act, the income tax schedule.

Single mothers face a tough time, especially during times of economic hardship. When services are privatised and costs go up, single mothers with low incomes suffer the most.

Women make up nearly half the workforce, but still do not get equal pay for jobs where men and women have the same responsibilities.

Every day in Malaysia, there is an average of 4 reported cases of violence against women, domestic violence or sexual violence. These are just the reported cases and does not even include the number of women who face sexual harassment in the workplace.

Women often face a lot of difficulties in getting services - whether it is for themselves or for the people they have to look after. The lack of good and affordable public transport is often a problem for women.

Women form half the population and nearly half the paid workforce, but very few are in government or leadership positions. Housework is not even considered as work!

Whenever there is a water shortage, or the haze or during evictions, most women bear the bigger burden of caring for their families' needs.

We want a society that respects every human being, regardless of sex, race and religion. -The Women's Candidacy Initiative

Put an end to discrimination against women. Women are asking for:

  • An open and transparent system that respects equal rights for women.
  • Fair and free judicial systems that respects the rights and needs of women.
  • An end to all forms of discrimination, violence and abuse.
  • Equality in work opportunities and equal pay for equal work.
  • Social and medical services that are good and affordable for all women.
  • To be more involved in the running of this country and in the making of the laws.
  • WHAT YOU CAN DO.

¨ Our Members of Parliament are responsible for representing our issues. It is not only our right but our duty to make sure they represent us. Contact your MP and ask them:

  • What have they done to find out more about women's problems?
  • How have they represented women's issues and how will they be representing women in the next Parliament sitting?
  • ¨ Join the initiative towards a more fair and equal society for women. Whether you are a woman or a man, speak up and support equal rights for women.
